Resting Metabolic Rate Calculator

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories that are needed to support basic metabolic and organ system functions, including digestion. It is essentially what one needs to maintain energy balance, absent any physical activity. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a similar concept, but it excludes digestive activity and is measured under strict conditions. Both values are similar, so RMR is sufficient for most people to determine what their baseline metabolic requirements are.

Then, calories are added to account for physical activity during the day by multiplying the RMR by an activity factor:

  • If you have a sedentary lifestyle and don’t get any exercise, multiple your RMR by 1.2.
  • If you mildly active, either due to walking and moving throughout the day or engaging in intensive exercise 1-3 times per week for at least 20 minutes, multiple your RMR by 1.4.
  • If you are moderately active, exercising 3-4 times per week for at least 30-60 minutes, multiply your RMR by 1.55.
  • If you are heavily active, exercising 5-7 times per week for at least 60 minutes, or if your occupation involves heavy labor, multiple your RMR by 1.7.
  • If you are an athlete who trains heavily throughout the day or have an occupation with extreme levels of activity, multiple your RMR by 1.9.

If you are trying to lose weight, more calories need to be expended than are consumed. But unfortunately, weight loss is not a simple mathematics equation. There are numerous other factors that can affect weight loss success, including metabolic and hormonal responses to fats, carbohydrates, and protein. And not all fats exert the same effect either. Our metabolic response to specific macronutrients is genetically influenced and, therefore, highly individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all diet for everyone.

If you have had your genes mapped with 23andme, I can develop a Nutrigenetic Report that is a blueprint for guiding personalized dietary and lifestyle strategies now and into the future. I would love to work with you and help you reach your goals. Let’s get started! 🙂
